Gloucestershire Race Collective Condemns Surge in Far-Right Extremism
Press Release – 5th August, 2024
This weekend, the UK has faced a menacing surge in far-right extremism, driven by divisive rhetoric from people in power and media outlets. This has resulted in the spread of racist ideologies, fostering a volatile environment that extremists can easily exploit. Regrettably, this is not a new development; it is the consequence of prolonged and ongoing rhetoric that has been demonising diverse ethnic communities for years.
This surge is not merely a wave of protests but a wave of violence. Extremists are targeting mosques and visibly identifiable Muslims, attacking shops owned by diverse ethnic communities, assaulting individuals from Black and Asian backgrounds, displaying anti-Semitic signs, and targeting allies within counter-protests. These acts of terror expose the deep-seated racism, Islamophobia, xenophobia, and anti-Semitism that have been normalised across society.
The Gloucestershire Race Collective urges all organisations to stand in solidarity with the affected communities. We call for understanding and support in recognising the fear and protective behaviour many from these communities may experience, particularly when leaving their homes and places of worship. Organisations should extend their support to diverse ethnic staff, clients, and the community through comprehensive risk assessments, flexibility in work locations, and the provision of safe spaces.
We must all oppose racism, anti-Islam, and anti-Semitism rhetoric to ensure a united front against hate.
